I'm thinking of getting a new gun or two

I shoot a Rem700 Mountain Rifle in .280 caliber. I live in Burnet County and don't travel to hunt since I have my own place. I have three daughters, yes they hunt, and I am expecting some grandchildren one of these days. What caliber of guns would you suggest I start purchasing that I can pass on to these kids when they get old enough to shoot? .240, .260? I figure buying now to pass on later might be a nice gesture on my part. Thanks

I'm talking about grandchildren that start hunting when they are young, pre-teens. 30-30's are fine, but I'd like them to have a more versatile gun when they are older and have opportunities to hunt elsewhere.

243 would be hard to beat to get started.

30.06 or 308 is never the wrong answer.

Everyone needs a 30-30 and .270. .243 is also a good caliber. cant go wrong with a .308 or 30-06 either.

I would suggest sticking to common calibers for guns you plan to hand down. Very few people reload.

Thanks for the suggestions. I owned a 25-06 one time and that was a sweet shooter and never should have traded it. I've not owned any .30 caliber guns except a 30-30. Appreciate it fellas. Time to start looking around.

I did a lot of research and for young shooters the 7mm-08 seemed to be the best answer for me. My 8 year old shoots a Micro-midas in .22-250 and loves it. I bough him a Weatherby 7mm-08 this year. 7mm-08 remains a good gun when they are adults.

.243 or .25-06,,,We have a youth model .243 as a camp gun. It has killed more kids first deer, deer period and hogs than you count over the years. Don't even know what brand or model it is. It has a cheap scope too. It is a killin machine.
