    Let's talk hand priming tools

I'm looking for a new hand primer and the two I'm considering are the 21st Century adjustable depth hand primer that uses the Lee trays and the RCBS Universal hand primer. I'm really leaning towards the 21st Century model but it's pretty pricey. On the other hand, it's pretty much a benchrest primer tool in an auto-feed configuration. Anyone have experience with either of these?

I have one of the old original Lee hand priming tools with the tray. Works pretty good, definitely better than the primer arm on my press.

Seems like a pretty benign step in the loading process but in case you hadn't thought of it yourself...do not point at face while priming a case

I have always used an old Lee auto prime. Been using it about 25 years and still works great. I bought it used at a gun show.

I recently bought a RCBS Universal. So far I'm really liking it.

I use the RCBS one and I really like it. Only one I've used, so take my opinion for what it's worth, but I like it.

I hear ya and that's what I was going to get until I saw the NEW Lee hand primers are getting loads of negative reviews and people longing for the old Lee tools that had the round tray. I checked one out yesterday and these new ones feel flimsy to me. That's why I'm looking at the RCBS Universal. But then I found out about the 21st Century over on AccurateShooter and 6mmbr. I'm pretty OCD (filter didn't like a-n-a l) about my loading and that thing's right up my alley - just really pricey. Lol.

I have the RCBS with primer tray and a 21st century with the adjustable depth. The 21st Century is built like a tank compared to the RCBS. They both work just fine but the 21st Century seats a primer much easier. I don't use the 21st Century with the Lee trays though. I use the single load type. Can't say it's much slower than the RCBS. I can prime 100 cases in about the same amount of time.

I have the regular RCBS hand priming tool, not the Universal one. It has a round primer tray. It works fine in my experience, which is limited as far as reloading goes. There is a little trickery to getting shell holders swapped on it. You have to partially take it apart and put it back together.

Sinclair and K&m are worth a look too

For many years I used the RCBS press to prime, and then I bought the hand-priming tool w/tray. Since I don't do volume work, either one does it for me.

I use a Sinclair and seat primers individually

Hornady makes a very good one. Luckily I have a bunch of the old Lee ones.

Throw me in the camp of not a fan of the new style Lee primer. I use the old style for I don't know how many years and likes it.

For my precision loads, I use the priming tool on my Forster press. I can feel it much better and feel it is more consistent.

I can't help with the others mentioned.

I use Sinclair's hand primer. It has a great feel. I've used Lyman, lee and rcbs. The Sinclair if far superior.

I haven't seen 21ST's hand primer with feeder tray, although I have his neck turning lathe and concentricity gauge. Both are QUALITY products and John will answer any questions you might have if he's not out shooting a match.
