    New 6.5

I'm about to start a new build on a short action 6.5. I had settled on a 6.5x47 Lapua but I'm having second thoughts. Since I made that decision I began gathering my parts. I already have my barrel and action so I'm not going to a long action or anything other than a variation slinging a 6.5 pill.

Talk me into our out of the 6.5x47.....but if you want to talk me out of it give me a better alternative and your reasoning.

    Thanks!

    Why not 6.5 x 300?
    I might go that route.....

Doesn't it need a long action?

For what it's worth I've already got three 6.5x284's so I don't need another one of those....plus they "need" a long action as well. I also recently sold a 260 so I want to go down that path. Considering a 6.5 Creedmore for no other reason than I can likely sell it easier down the road.

Why does the 6.5x284 "need" a long action?

It will work in a short action but you may give up some performance by not being able to seat the bullets out long.

I understand that, but its a short action round. I dont own one and im no smith, so school me. Will it be too long for the action or the throat?

20 yrs ago, extreme LR shooting was rarely heard of

with the birth of VLD bullets and high BC projectiles, they have a longer bearing surface and bullets have to be seated long

long seated bullets do not always fit in a magazine or feed reliably

if you go with a LA, you can seat the bullets as long as you want

I have a custom 6.5x284 on a Nesika single shot , short action. since it's a SS, I can seat bullets however long I want

No idea if it needs a long action.

I remember recently reading about someone building a 6.5x300WSM....

pictures to illustrate my post above

This shows a loaded round (2.805") and the component bullet as it would be seated.

The pic below shows a coal length of 2.960" . Bullets shown from left to right are.

                            140 NP
                            130 AB
                            130 TSX
                            140 Berger VLD

if you built this on a LA or had an extended Wyatts box mag, you could seat bullets out longer

When ultimate accuracy is your goal, you want the bullets seated longer and not into the powder ... OAL is 3.190" and set up for a LA with deep throating for the 140 VLD's.

So question if I have a.25-06 that I want to use as a donor action for a build? Can I use for a 6.5 Creedmore? Sorry for my ignorance just trying to understand a little better.
