I did shoot an old 870 wingmaster this weekend, and really liked it...what do you not like about the Novas?

Pretty sure the super nova shoots 3.5" shells and nova only shoots up to 3"

Love my relatively inexpensive old Binelli Nova. Hunted everything you mention except deer with everything from cheap dove loads to expensive duck/goose loads. Never a jam or any other problem with thousands of rounds through it.

Remington 870 will last you a lifetime if you take care of it. A good buddy of mine has a comercial fishing business out in the gulf and that is what he has kept on board as a shark gun for 10 or so years, still works like a charm

Remington 870's are like the chevy 350 motors. More accessories than you would ever need. I bought a scoped slug barrel for mine. It does everything you could ask a shotgun to do.

I bought a 870 Express with the 28" barrel. No problems here after 2 years. I shoot skeet with my cousin, he and alot of buddies go over to shoot around annie oakley style. Im hitting just as well or even better than some with guns that were 3 or 4 times as expensive as mine. I wouldnt change my purchase one bit.

870, you can shoot birds then use as a boat paddle then shoot some more birds.

We shoot 870's at work. Good reliable guns. I saw a anniversary edition the other day for $490. Not bad for wood stock gun. They have the express combos as well, rifle barrel and spread barrel for around $600, I think.

Another thing to consider, if you end up not liking the gun, the 870 will be easier to unload without much loss.

I bought my boy a Stevens, had two barrels and was cheaper than Mossberg. I have seen people with issues with the slide, but he loves the gun. Mossberg just has a lot of attachments you can get to customize the weapon. I mainly shoot Browning. If you want to spend the money, they will be worth it.

870 express, Mossberg 500 or Winchester 1300 are go to guns in that range. Im sure there are others too but these are the ones I've had experience with.Don't think you could go wrong with any of them.

Browning BPS .. great scattergun that you won't get rid of when you upgrade to a semi or O/U

The nova is probably the most durable pump shotgun, the older Winchesters 1300s seem to be next, then the 870 and Mossberg. I know people will try to argue that fact, but when you look at what pumps are run at 3 gun and action type shotgun matches where people put 1000s of rounds through their guns those are the ones that seem to hold up the best.

I would look hard at buying an older 1300 (an 870 or Mossberg would be fine too)you can pick them up for 200 or so, and then skip the whole idea about a slug barrel and get a rifle (it doesn't have to be real expensive), you will thank me later
