    Cerakote Cost?

I have a TC Encore Pro Hunter that my parents bought me for graduation from college about 10 years ago, and it has always showed little rust spots, but they have been easy enough to take care of. But so some reason now it wants to get big spots of active rust, no matter how often I oil it. I love this gun but I need it to be a little more weather resistant.

What is the going rate for Cerakote on a gun like this?

Is your Encore stainless or carbon steel. Certain SS's will rust. Often carbon steel can be imbedded in stainless and that is what you see rusting, steel wool will do this.

Single color Cerakote will probably run $150-$200

Its supposed to be stainless, but I have used steel wool on it recently, so that may be what Im seeing. Its just tiny little spots, but they are everywhere. I have read that the stainless used by TC is prone to light rust. Not sure why, but those seem to be the reviews.

When I was living in apartments and rent houses I kept it in a hard case with egg crate padding, which is where the initial rust came from, but it neutralized easily and I hadn't had a problem in about 10 years since I have stored it out of the case. Now all of a sudden it is wanting to rust on the barrel, so I used the steel wool once on the bad spots, followed with a fine scuff pad and some oil on everything else. I just want to preserve my gun because I love the way it shoots, and the sentimental value.

If you don't want to spend the coin to cerakote the rifle do the following. Clean the rust as you have in the past and then clean all oil from the gun. Apply a coat of wax to all metal surfaces which will seal the metal and prevent future rust issues.

In the mean time, you could also do a rattle can paint job yourself, starting with a base coat of rust neutralizing spray paint. Degrease all the surfaces you're going to paint with brake cleaner, before you paint. Whenever you go to have it cerakoted, they're going to bead blast it anyway; so they won't charge anything extra to strip your DIY paint job. You may be surprised at how good it looks after some spray paint and you won't have to worry about rust in the meantime.

I had one of my Encores done in sniper gray Cerakote and I am really happy with it. It's worth the money and looks great. I used a guy in Lavon and he did really good work. I will dig it out and post a pic in a few.

For the cost, I would definitely look into the Cerakote when season is over. In the mean time, what kind of wax would you recommend? Like car wax?

Sorry, can't post any pics on here right now for some reason. Shoot me a PM and I can text them to you if you want.

Regular car wax will work. I have a friend with an extensive collection of real old Winchester lever actions and he waxes all his guns. He won't use a drop of oil on exterior metal surfaces. He states that oil just attracts dust and dirt.

Not sure why I didn't think of that. I wax all the knives I make to keep them from rusting before they are delivered to the customer. Makes sense that it would work on a gun too.

If I got the Cerakote route I would go with the satin stainless color to keep it stock looking.

I am curious and have been looking at this as well for one of my guns. Googled and Tom's custom guns show they'll do the barreled action for $175 (125 + 50 minimum disassembly charge), but I don't know much about them. For that price, I may do it after the season.

Is this for the whole gun, just stock, or just barrel/action?
