    16" vs 20" barrel 308

I'm about to buy a new rifle. I can't decide between the Remington 700 sps tactical aac or a Remington 700 sps tactiacl 16.5". They both have a heavy barrel, 1-10 twist, threaded barrel. The only difference is the barrel length. Mainly going to target shoot but will also bring to the tree stand during bow season to shoot hogs. Maybe one day down the road I might get a suppressor for it. Which barrel length would y'all go with and why?

Shorter barrel you will lose velocity but for box stand hunting suppressed the shorter the better.

I like my 20" (mine started as the Varmint with a 26" barrel but I had it cut down. Can't say I lost any preformance and accuracy I think actually improved. My only compliant is hunting box stands, even with the 20, when you add a suppressor, it's a pain to stick out the window without bumping something, and don't even try to switch windows because a critter walked too far to one side. That's the only reason I might consider the 16" as I feel like you are going to suffer some velocity loss and pay for it with increased blast.

20" now and cut to 16" when/if you get a suppressor.

Check out this link. It is from Match Grade Machine and while primarily it is regarding Encore barrels and length. I would think it should mean the same out of all barrels. Hope this helps.

I'd go shorter for the total length with a can sake.

I hunt with a 13.5" .308 pistol with which lack of velocity has never been an issue.
(Can't remember ever not getting full penetration on the 10 or so deer I've killed with it)

Ok having a hard time. Just priced the both form a buddy that's a ffl and there the same price. As far as the can it might be way down the road. I like the idea of cutting and re threading the barrel

What's the average round about cost of cutting and threading a barrel

If you plan on putting a can (suppressor) on it, I'd go with a 16.5" barrel. But if you're not sure whether you'll do that or not, I would get a 20" and use it until you're ready for the can and then cut it down to 16.5". That way you can buy a 20" and have the increased velocity and then when you're ready you can cut it down yet still maintain good velocity after-cut.

I have a 16" and an 18" both are suppressed and will not have one longer than 16" again. I shoot both rifles out to 800 yards and the 16 shoots just as well as the 18.

It cost me $150 to have mine cut, recrowned and threaded. In hindsight, I think that's a bit higher than normal, and I won't use that service again for that type work. It was my local dealer, whom I've done business with for years, and we were just talking one day and he mentioned that they could do it. Claimed a 2 week turn around time. Come to find out, they shipped it off, and it took 6 weeks to come back to me. Gunsmith work..... not their cup of tea, but they do have a fairly decent selection, so I continue to do business with them.

Thank y'all for the help. I just had him ordered me the 20". If and when the time comes for a suppressor I can try it on the 20" and see how I like it the cut it down if I want to. One day I will get a can for it but it might be few years down the road. I want to get set up for reloading first and me and the wife are gunna try for another kid in about a year or so.
