By no means am I saying it cant be done with OTC ammo it's just not what I consider wise. Shooting in general gets more expensive everyday and LR shooting requires a lot of time and rounds shot down range to be anywhere proficient at it. Hand loading will allow you to tailor a load and shoot more for the same amount of money spent on factory stuff.

The 2 most likely candidates for long range shooting in a long action with a .532" bolt face are the 7mm RM and 300 WM.
This is 100% accurate. To achieve that level of accuracy you "should" first pick your bullet, then you build your rifle around the bullet like a custom tailored suit. For me it was a 7mm Rem Mag 180gr VLD Berger, fire formed Norma brass necked down to .309 (which means I can't shoot factory loads). Ladder tested ammo to dial in groups. Even then, your rifle is only as good as the glass you're looking through. I think you have a 1 in a hundred chance of finding a factory load that performs to this level of precision in your rifle, and 1 in a thousand that you can hand the cartridge to your partner, and shoot to this level in his rifle as well. LR is a game for the obsessive compulsive crowd, but it's worth it to hear the gong three seconds after the shot.

I'd go with another 7mm magnum.

It's a fantastic caliber, and capable of shooting well beyond 1,000 yards.

The reason most 7 mag rifles suck to shoot, is because they are built as a lightweight hunting rifle. Put a heavy barrel on it, with a nice comfy stock with some mass, and it's not too bad to shoot at all.

If you wanna get crazy, look at a http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Know...Practical.html It is a wildcat, and you'll have to reload for it (I saw, you don't reload at this time) but it looks like a neat thing.
