    Fail to feed problems

I have a model 98 Mauser, in .243 cal. It is a custom rifle, bought used from a " not so bright " individual...... That's another story...

On occasion, the cartridge will not engage the extraction claw, and will seat in the chamber. The only way to clear the cartridge is use a cleaning rod to unseat said cartridge.

It happened yesterday in the blind. Had to find a piece of wire to clear the chamber. I just scrubbed the bore, it is in good shape now.

    Any thought's??

Sounds like someone messed with the lips of the magazine and the cartridge is sitting too high and occasionally gets in front of the extractor. With a round in the magazine and the bolt all the way back check the clearance between the round and the extractor claw, it should be close but not touching. Also check and make sure the round isn't tilted and contacting the lip full length. If the problem is the lips they are part of the receiver and would be hard to fix. Only idea I have is possible shaving the extractor some.

Have you taken the bolt apart and cleaned out any dirt and grease which could be restricting the extractor? Extractor could also be worn or extractor spring weak.

Bolt has not been taken down... Outside of bolt is spotless.

No debris in the extractor claw.
