    Educate me on bipods

Rifle is a Tikka T3 in 7mm Mag.
    I've seen 3 general options:

    - Bipod attached to front sling mount
    - Tripod I could strap on my fanny pack
    - Shooting sticks

For a bipod, is 6-9" high enough, or do you need longer? I always hunt with a fanny pack, so if needed I could take it off and use it as a base under the tripod. Is that reasonable or a bad idea?

I've seen the Primos tripod in the stores, it would give me the height for a shot sitting on my butt in the dirt.

Old fashioned shooting sticks which double as a walking stick?

God bless Texas! 462 days until I put my house on the market and leave this liberal mecca and nice weather behind.

I bought a Harris bipod that extends to 23 inches (years ago). I'm 6'1" and it is slightly too short for me shooting in the sitting position. I have to put a hump in my back.
It is I think 13 inches retracted and it's a smidge too tall for prone. It works, though.
All that said, I seldom even use it, and it stays mounted on my rifle. The situations that I get into while hunting rarely call for it.
I either use the sling and brace up against some solid object, such as a tree, or I rest on something, like a blind or vehicle window.

For Prone I'd go with a 9-12" Harris bipod. It gets off the ground alittle better and easier to shoulder and pivot up and down.

Once you get past the price, Atlas bipods are awesome for prone. I would stay in the 6-9" regardless of Harris or Atlas.

I shoot a Harris Pivoting bipod. Depends on what you do or where you shoot. Prone is ok for target, or if I know where I will be shooting and the terrain allows for a prone shot. If I am stalking or do not know the terrain, I use a bipod for a sitting position. 6-9" is what I use for prone. I believe the other one is a 12-25", maybe the 13.5-27". I probably use it the most.

The Atlas bipod for bench or prone shooting is hard to beat. It has 3 positions of angle for the legs that really help with taking advantage of the "height" adjustments. I use the Atlas for those purposes. For spot and stalk hunting/shooting, I use the Primos trigger stick. I prefer the bipod version, but they do have a tripod too. I have the short one for pop up blind hunting and the long version for full blown spot and stalk hunting where I likely will be shooting from the standing position.

Having said all that, 99% of my gun hunting is done with PCP air guns as opposed to rifles, but the above shooting options would work very well with a powder burner. In most cases, and in particular with comparing your T3 with my PCP's, the T3 is probably lighter so if the trigger sticks will work for my PCP set up, it ought to work for you T3.

I took Blake's advise on shooting sticks. Since most of my hunting is spot and stalk, I wanted something that was useful when I was not shooting.

I made a couple hiking staffs from broken shovel handles. They also serve well for self defense!

I rip cut the bottom in half, and used a piece of hardware from my duck hunting cart in the parts can when I upgraded the axle.

The top is cut on an angle so it only opens one side, and a sanded the V for the gun to 1/4" wide and put rtv silicone. Rattle can oak leaves. I'm getting an O ring to slide on the bottom to hold the halves tight, if that fails I'll try paracord.

I should post on the DIY also.
