    I know you are sure its rust, but for grins try a little copper fouling remover. if patch comes out green, you are on to something. Remember to remove all copper solvents, are you will for sure have rust. good luck.

        Yah I gotcha, thanks. I did do that already and it was clean. But thank you guys for the heads up, it does tend to look similar.

          I had a 1917 Eddystone that I thought was rusted. Incredible amount of copper fouling. Never would shoot. before or after cleaning copper out. Got it to a collector.

            I have a 1917 Winchester that would never shoot. After getting all the copper out and finding a load it shoots one hole groups now.
