    Gun vice ideas

Hey all, as I move into my senior year of college I am working on a gun vice with a group of 3 other students. The company we are working with has created a modular bench, and we are designing a gun vice attachment for it.
What do you folks that use these daily look for in a vice/bench? We've looked at Tipton style vices, and are looking for ways to improve on them.
    Thanks all.

    gun vise

add a feature where you can lock a gun vice to a table, and actually lock the gun to the vise where its stable BUT... where you can easily detach gun and shoot like a rest also.. hope this makes sense...

Thanks for the thoughts, fast and secure are certainly on the list.
Cmon everyone else I know there are plenty of guys in here that know their way around a vice!

Look at the Parrot vice & improve on it if possible...once I found this I gave up cradles for long gun work. It's made for woodwork, but perfect for guns.

It has removable angle jaws that will grip at an angle if needed automatically. I have two sets. One padded with cork & another with rubber depending if I need to grab the bbl or stock.

You can also turn the vice on it's side to hold the gun vertical...exceptional tool for the gun shop.

Thanks for the tip. That would certainly make for a good start. Maybe incorporating the base of that into a more gun specific tool?

You are getting a little personal talking about my vices.

But for a vise, it would be nice to have interchangeable heads or complete units for holding a stock and for holding a barrel/action without marring the finish.

If you could combine the parrot & that mini panavice into one quality unit sized for long guns, I would buy it...offer a permanent & portable clamp on version maybe using the same base to interchange.

I'll take a share of the profits...

I can tell you what's wrong with the Tipton vise. It works great on a typical bolt action rifle but sometimes I want to clamp an AR, usually just the upper receiver. I end up shimming it with pieces of wood to get it to work. If you can design a more versatile device, you will have a winner.
