Scope Lapping Bar DIY

I have access to a mill and lathe and was going to go about milling a scope lapping bar and alignment tool out of mild steel. For a 1" scope are the lapping bars exactly 1" or slightly smaller? I was curious if someone could mic the OD of one that they have so I can verify.
