    AR10 Questions

I recently inherited a custom built AR10. I've always been a .308 guy, but I'm new to the AR world. Any advice on the best ammo to run through this machine? Anything to avoid? Is there a significant difference between .308 and 7.62x51mm rounds? Sorry to sound ignorant... Thanks in advance!

I do not own an AR-10 yet. I can bet most all factory ammo will work, but some it will like better than others. If you are hand loading I may have some advise.

The difference is basically the same as the difference between a 5.56 and a .223 since one is NATO.

I'd start out with Federal 150 grain Softpoints and see what it does.

.308 is higher pressure than the 7.62 due to the 7.62 being developed for the gas system on the M-14. Opposite of the 5.56/.223

I wasn't sure which one had the higher pressure. I knew you probably wasn't supposed to shoot one in the other but I couldn't remember which it was so I figured I better not say.

Thanks guys. So that means I should stick with .308 ammunition?

Twist rate should help with staring to narrow bullet weight. My 308 custom AR loves hand loaded 168g on top of 41.5 grains of H4895. Does not like anything less then 155 grain bullets. 1/10 twist.

Thats a nice looking machine you got there.

Figure out your twist rate. That should give you an idea of what will shoot well out of it

4895 was designed specifically for the M1/M14 gas system.

I'd also say to stay away from soft nose rounds that has lead sticking out; the lead some times brakes off when cycling. Off the shelf, Fusion seems to run pretty well in both my 10's
