16" is perfectly fine, if you decide to SBR the 6.8 does well even out of a 12.5" barrel

The 6.8 def shoots flatter than the 300 blk but if you're wanting 4-500 yards you might look at the Grendel

Grendel and SPC are neck and neck to about 150. Past 150 the Grendel starts to overtake the SPC and accelerates the differences the longer the distance.

I like the 120 gr NBT for hunting. I had a tack driving load for the TTSX but the velocity was not there for consistent expansion.

As mentioned ammo seems to be more available for the 6.8 & I don't reload (yet).

Is a 16" barrel good for the 6.8 or does it need to be longer?

I talked to the guy at ARF.com at Canton Saturday and they don't offer a 6.8 barrel there. He said that the 300 BLK would serve the same purpose and then he would graduate to the 6.5 G. I have a 300 but haven't shot it out to the 400 yds he said it would be capable of shooting. I've always understood that the 300 was a 200 to 250 yd gun and that would be max for it. This is confusing to me!

The reason for the original question is 'd like to reach out to 4 to 500 (that's all I think I can shoot) as economical as possible.
If you're looking for a solid barrel for 6.8 SPC, look at white oak armament...

300BLK is for all intents a purposes a sub 200yrd gun. It just doesn't have the velocity to really reach out there.

Then I would say that 6.8SPC would get you out to 400, and anything beyond, look into 6.5 Grendel.

I have both in AR's. Flip a coin. Not enough difference to worry about, up to 300 yds. Past 300, I personally run out of eyes. In a bolt gun, Creedmoor all the way. Beats either the Grendel or SPC any way you can measure it.

True, and in a bolt gun my .300 RUM smokes the creedmoor.

6.5 without any hesitation. It will out penetrate, out perform ballisticly and more inherently accurate.
