Okay, I get a little (edited "A" word) about leveling my scopes.
I just got this Ruger American and a Monarch and a good set of Leupold PRW rings and set about mounting them. I quickly discovered there isn't a square surface on this thing. The Wheeler Level Level Level doesn't work as there aren't bolt guide rails either.
Here is my simple and precise solution. Just pop it out of the stock, find a good level surface and set the rifle on the edge of the level across the mag well. (see pic)
Since I had just finished french tuning my bow I already had a bright orange string with a weight on the end hanging like a plumb bob. Once the rifle is squared up just twist the scope to align the vertical cross-hair with the string. Continue to check back and fourth as you tighten the rings as it will often move if you aren't careful.
Works like a charm.
side note:
1) the level app in the Iphone is a joke. DO NOT TRUST IT
2) a level across the scope cap, at least in the case of this Monarch was not level either.
