    1911?

I think the shell wasn't seated all the way in the barrel and the firing pin went off. Blew the Mag out and turned the shells in the mag vertical. Anyone have experience with this?

First. Is that a factory load or a hand load?

Second. What happened to the bullet? Squib or did it exit the barrel?

SWC should be seated with the shoulder about 10 thousands proud past the brass. Looks like your long which could have fired out of battery.

Did you notice a soft shot prior. You could have shot behind an obstructed barrel on a squib.

You could have double charged as mentioned above.

What powder are you using and what press.

I would try a plunk test with your other rounds on your barrel.

It was not the guns fault, that is where 45s blow out when the round is overcharged. Note how only one edge of the case is blown out and the rest is fine. If the gun was fired out of battery the whole base would be bulged, here only the unsupported area of the case was blown out, which means the gun was locked up. Just an educated guess Dillon 550?

I have seen that 1 time, it was the case was too long and didnt go completely into battery before it fired. We cleaned the pistol and it was 100% fine, check your brass length and your seating length, chamber could have also just had some lube built up in the front of the chamber, I have seen mine do that with some lead I bought from a gunshow. Once I switched to Missouri Bullet CO no more lube issues.

If your case looked like that case the gun went into battery

We did some extensive testing before we cleaned it, there were a handful that wouldn't let the slide lock completely so the back of the case wasn't fully supported. Obviously we didn't fire it again but about 95% sure thats what was going on.

A couple things, if the slide was not far enough forward that the case was not supported then: more than likely the hammer would not have hit the firing pin as it would be blocked by the bottom of the firing pin stop (geometry would not allow it), and if by chance the hammer did strike the firing pin with the gun out of battery, the strike would be very off center on the primer because the barrel would be still tilted down. The case in the pic has a dead center firing pin strike, as do all pics I have seen when a 1911 "fires out of battery."Also the trigger on a 1911 will not reset until the gun is far enough into battery that no harm will come from firing it, Browning was no moron. I know no one wants to think there reloads are overcharged but, they are, so be careful.
