Don't waste money in a .22 LR or .223 unless you only want it for plinking. Get an AR in 30 cal. (300 Blackout, 308, or 300 win mag) if you plan to hunt with it.
Brands for consider. AAC, Noveske, Daniel Defense, Colt.
I dont know where to start. Im not a big fan, so not really wanting to go all-in.
The gun may be used for hog hunting, but mainly for plinking.
I was considering a .223, if it matters.
My brother tells me to build one. I guess Im not too familiar with them.
Colt 6920 is as good as it gets in the $900 range. 5.56 is a great start. You can always throw on a .300 blackout upper if you want to hunt pigs or deer inside of 250 or so yards.
i realize this is out of stock but normally every Thursday or Friday its back in stock at $499
you sound like you just want one to get into the ar game. These are all mil spec so the same as most all mil spec rifles you will find anywhere. Its pretty easy to build them yourself with help from youtube. The triggers will suck but all mil spec triggers do so that would be the only thing i would upgrade. Buy or order a lower locally and you're all set.
Trying to choose is kind of confusing! If you can afford it, you can go all in with one of the high end guns for $2000+ or you can get an entry level beater for less than $600. If you are wanting a plinker/maybe take it hunting every now and then, I would get a mid-level gun (Colt, Rock River, etc.) and add an aftermarket trigger and decent 1-4 or 2-7 optics.
If you enjoy tinkering, assembling your own is very doable. To do so, you would need to either buy or borrow a few specialized tools. There are countless YouTube videos on how to go about putting one together. If you go this route, I would recommend buying a factory assembled upper and assembling your lower.
As mentioned, once you have one, you can modify it to your heart's content. It is extremely easy to swap uppers, stocks, hand guards, optics, etc.
