    .270 Elk bullet

Loaning my .270 WSM to a buddy for an Elk hunt this fall and I need to work up a load for it. What bullets should I look at? Been loading 130 grain accubond for deer and it blows a large hole in them. I'm afraid it doesn't quite hold together well enough for Elk but I've never shot one so I don't know. I'm thinking something in the 150 grain range.

    It's all about shot placement

I'm not the one doing the shooting or I wouldn't worry about it.

I've shot a few with 150 grain. I think 165 is about the biggest you can buy off the shelf but not sure.

150 grain Nosler Partition would be my first choice.

accubond, partition or a barnes ttsx bullet will do fine

Bingo with the Accubond 140 a close second place.

I'd say look at that new 170 grain EOL Berger but you likely don't have enough twist to run it.

If it was me, I would go with at least a 140 grain minimum. Not to say that the 130 wouldn't cut it, because what is important is shot placement. I just like to hunt with heavier bullets. I don't have any experience with a 270 even though I own one. It's just not my go to rifle. As far as, bullets go, accubond, partitions, tsx, the berger line of bullets etc. should all work fine on an elk. Never shot an elk, but I have killed a few nilgai using a 3006 with grand slams. Good luck.

need to check barrel twist rate to make sure bullets will stabilize

you may be wasting your time

also, be more concerned about bullet construction vs. weight

I know mine shoot lights out with the 140 Accubonds.....I wouldn't hesitate to use it. I took it to Colorado as the backup to my 300 RUM last year.

Barrel is 1:10 according to Remington.

I am most concerned about bullet construction. My only experience being with the 130 Accubond and it makes a large exit even without hitting major bone on whitetails.

I use 140 grain partitions in a 270 wsm, but haven't got the elk to stand still and let me shoot them. I can tell you it groups at +/- 1 moa, 59 grains of RL-22, 3100 fps.

I'd shoot the Nosler Partitions all day long and not look back

Jack O'Conner said a 150 grain thru the lungs and you have a dead elk.

150gr TSX will bust the heck out of some bone if its hit. That would be my choice
