    Bullet performance

What is your experience with Hornady SST's?

I typically shoot shoulders on whitetail and I'm curious to see how these will hold up. Not worried about meat damage, but want to make sure they will get through the shoulders and into the vitals.....for a clean kill. 140 gr SST at approx. 3000 fps in an APR 270 win. Chad at Dallas Reloads loaded them for me and says he likes the SST much better than Nosler Ballistic tips. Any info is appreciated!

SSTs are my second choice bullet for my .270. They are a great round with lots of power. they only fall under my Nosler BT.

I shoot SST's in my 308. They hold together very good and open up big. I've only killed pigs with them so far but 200+ pounders get shoulder shot and drop on the spot.

Basically its Hornady's version of the Ballistic Tip. I've shot them out of my .270 as well. They're designed to expand quickly like the Nosler. I've never had anything walk away after being hit with one. You're gonna have a lot of blood shot meat with a shoulder shot and the SST. I generally try to double lung them.

I too like the high shoulder shot, but I only take those with my 7 mm SAUM and 140 gr. Barnes TTSX.

The only Bullet I use, 270 and 7 mag. They do some crazy damage. For the most part don't get pass throughs, but when you do it's nasty, and makes for some good damage pics . The insides are just jelly, and yes you will ruin shoulders with them

Most animals are drt, but when they do run its not far.

My brother uses them out of a 7mm-08 and he loves them. Dropped a whitetail doe @ 504yards shoulder shot. Also has put a hurting on many hogs and yotes. Very hard hitting accurate bullet. He often shoots them to 1k and easily hits gallon jugs.

Like others have said, they're Hornady's version of a BT.

I shot them in a 300 WM a few years back and found them to be very accurate. Only one kill, an average sized buck at 200 yards. It was just behind the shoulder with massive internal damage and about a 1.5 inch exit. I feel the 30 call much like the BT is just a bit tougher in construction and would expect a pass though on most deer. Below a 30, you'll get massive internal trauma and a greater degree of bullet fragmentation resulting in fewer pass through's.

Bottom line, put the bullet where it needs to be and it will take care of business.

I couldn't really ask for a more lethal round. I shot them ever since they came out with the superformance SST. Kills them either on the spot or have taken only 5-10 steps before falling over. My only complaint is, out of my 270, they tend to fall apart and i have found on more than one occasion a piece of copper jacket or lead in my food when eating. My wife doesn't like coming across that while chewing so i switched to the GMX and havent looked back. I have killed 9 deer and 10 or so hogs with the SST in 270 and just a hand full of hogs with my 308 SST.

Shoot them in my 308 150gr and also in my 6.8 bolt 120

Shot them in my 3006 as well but that gun sold a while back ..

Have friends that shoot them in 7mag .. Shot a 225 boar about 200 out .. Raining so blood was not there but only ran 15 yards max ..

You sure that's not a gmx? I don't see any lead.

Pretty sure... Unless a gmx got into the sst box, but I've never bought gmx before

They are a cup and core bullet so the lead core frequently separates from the jacket. Still wicked awesome deer bullets.

I've killed a big bodied south Texas buck and an Aoudad shooting SSTs out of my 300WM with no pass through and massive internal damage (ie, jello). Buck dropped in his tracks, aoudad went ten feet and fell over.

Shot a blackbuck a couple weeks ago with my .257roberts shooting SSTs and got a pass through with a 1.5" hole on the back side.
