    28 Nos Twist Rate Question

So I' considering trading for a Montana Rifle Comp. 28 Nos. It's a 26" barrel and the twist is 9.5" Do you guys think that would stabilize 180gr bullets when I start reloading with it? Thanks.

call MRC and get the skinny straight from their mouth

if they built it, chances are they did R&D and can provide load data

I'd agree with Cajun Blake, but I went with a 1-8.5 twist in mine and it stabilizes the 195's well. I know McWhorter loads those 180's for their builds and they seem to prefer a 1-9 twist on their barrels.

My gut reaction is that isn't fast enough but take Cajun Blake's advice and call them.

Per the Berger calculator, it would work but would likely be marginal. An 8.5 or 9 would do a better job.

My fear with a "marginal" bullet stability is losing stability (accuracy) at long range where that bullet isn't moving nearly as fast.

I too am battling that concern. I've found a great load for my 240 WBY running a 115 Berger but fear the 1:8 is going to let me down at long range. It's grouping really well at 100 and my next will be taking it to 300 and 600 yards.

The ballistic numbers are great, much like the move from a 160-180 in the 7 but it shoots the 105 VLD to .5 moa at 600 yards. The 115 will have to match that for me to shoot it.

I called and spoke with them. Looks like I'm good up to the 175ABLR but unless I stay at altitude, 180 is likely too much to stabilize consistently.

The 160-175 will be a screamer in that round and provide more then enough retained velocity / energy to shoot 800 plus yards.
