Before some of our regs changed I used a 12 gauge for the most part. I have a Remington 870. I have a smoothbore slug barrel that has accounted for several deer. I have used my field barrel with a modified choke tube and is more than accurate if you limit your range. I usually use the Wichester 1 oz 2 3/4" slugs. Mine shoots a little bigger groups with the 3" but a high shoulder hit with either usually throws them down. Been using muzzleloaders and my .450 for the most part during gun season. Now since we changed yet again I am pretty excited about using my .308 this year!

Try what you have first. For many years I hunted only with a shotgun. Had several that were really good at 50 -60 yards with regular bird barrel and rifled slugs, many with old fixed choke. The hardest part may be getting a consistent sight picture with just the beads. If you mount an inexpensive red dot on it your groups and consistency will really improve.

Much past 50 or 60 yards and a rifled barrel with sabots is worth the investment.

I'm wondering something similar... I'll be carrying my super vinci out hunting dove this fall and had the idea to carry a couple of slugs in my pocket in case a hog walked out.

Sounds like 3" Remington sluggers would do the trick, and it's okay to shoot them with a bird choke in?

I run a Mossberg 500, with a 24 inch rifled Barrel. it has a cantilever Scope Mount. Absolutely Amazing what you can do with a Slug (Sabot) out of this combo. Pie Plates at 200 are really not an issue.. I can create clover leafs at 100 with it.

this combo for me was a necessity due to hunting Zone 4 in Arkansas (Shotgun only).

I shoot the Hornady Sabot slugs and while the recoil is heavy, it is not unbearable.

Just a recap. I bought a improved cylinder choke tube for my 28" bird barrel. Got me some 3" Remington sluggers and some 2 3/4 reduced recoil loads and was very impressed with the accuracy of both loads at all distances to 75 yds with just the bead sights. Recoil wasn't bad at all, even with the 3" mag loads. Man what a hole they leave in the target. Beasty for sure!

You can try a rifled choke, with the riffled slugs and smooth bore. Help tighten the groups.

Yes, improved cylinder or modified choke would prob give the best results. I have a youth and ladies model 870 Express in 20ga that throws clover leafs at 50 yards with modified choke.

For you fellers using smooth bores with vent ribs, you can get fully adjustable aftermarket rifle sights that clamp to the ribs. Williams Sights is one mfg. And the gun still shoots bird shot good with them on too.
