    AR build question

I'm thinking about getting a stripped-lower (or a few) but I am ignorant about the AR platform and builds, etc.

I don't have any specific ideas but I have toyed with the thought of building something just for the sake of doing it. I already a have a basic off-the-shelf AR so probably would build something different. Most likely something in a caliber other than 5.56/223.

    Questions are:
    1. Are the AR lowers caliber specific? If not, what caliber guns can be built off a standard lower?

    2. Prices are all over the place...what is the practical difference between an $80 lower and the higher priced ones?

    Thanks,
    Mike

    Google is your friend.

    1. Lowers are not caliber specific, well there is large bore -308, and small bore -556

    2. Not a big difference. Roll mark mostly. You can find lowers as low as $40. You pay for bragging rights.

Have fun and watch out, it's addicting

I buy the cheapest one I can find. Unless you are wanting a cool design on one.

Building one myself. With the 556 bore lower, you can spec a 556/223, 6.8, or a 300 blk out from what I understand. This is my first time as well and going to run with the 300 blk. Gives me a little more power for larger game, potentially allowing my wife to shoot deer at shorter distances. She hates the kick of a full rifle so hoping this might get her somewhat more interested.

It is fun. Found some really cook furniture kids that are pre hydro-dipped. Just trying to save some money to get the upper, which is going to cost you the most. ($400 for base level complete upper)

Good luck and have fun. I know I have.

Here are a couple of less expensive options:

          $199.00: http://www.primaryarms.com/search.as...pgnum=&pgsize=

          $209: http://www.joeboboutfitters.com/Radi...s_s/114877.htm

PSA usually runs specials for their bolt carrier group + changing handle combo for $90-$100: http://palmettostatearmory.com/psa-5...g-handle2.html

Thanks Dave. Great find. The $200 does come with the CH or BCG but still, adding those is around $100 so still savings. Great find man, appreciate it.

Less than 16" barrel requires it to be a pistol.

So why does it need to be a pistol, if we have an honest gov. Just kidding. I know. ***** Feds.
