    Cerakote AR parts question

I had some Noveske parts cerakoted on my last build and it caused me a lot of issues because the notoriously tight tolerances became intolerable. I had to remove paint in most of the hole in the lower in order to get parts (like the takedown pins, mag release, etc) to fit and function.

Is it typical to cerakote even threaded parts, like on the upper receiver or barrel extension?

I'm trying to figure out if every part should be cerakoted or if a good painter will tape off threaded connections and/or the places where moving parts are inserted. I love the look of cerakote and the protection it provides but my last experience has me considering going back to spray paint camo.

I had one coated for my wife, and it was cheap parts, and had similar problems. The guy that did it said he usually polishes the pin holes after paint to remove the build up. Another guy I know said he uses the current size drill bit and just turns it by hand to clean out the holes. My painter said he polished my wife's parts, but forgot that some of the more exotic colors go on thicker than like a black or FDE, so he must not have removed enough. I just rolled some 400 grit wet/dry sandpaper up and finished the polishing job. Roll pins were no problem since they compress, solid pins like trigger pins and takedown pins were tight.

I do not recall there being paint on the threaded parts. There is paint inside but the upper and lower though, and I like it that way. It cleans up so much easier with the paint, and since her's is a light color, I can see all the carbon build-up and I know when it's actually clean.

I'm having the same issues... I leave the pivot pin in at all times. Dropping a mag usually is followed by dropping curse words

Whenever I have parts cerakoted I tape /block off the parts that mate pretty tightly and make sure they understand not to paint those: like muzzle threads, barrel extensions, gas tube roll pin holes, takedown holes, etc. I learned to do this this after I had my first revolver frame coated, i couldn't fit the trigger or hammer over the studs and had to sand them down.

            Good advice!

I asked my painter not to paint the gas block seat because the Syrac block would barely go on the barrel prior to painting. He ignored my instructions and told me to use a hammer. Lol. I ended up having to sand off ALL the Cerakote to install the block. Next time I'm going to do my own tape job.

Good to hear I'm not the only one with this issue. Trying to install a Geiselle trigger in a lower with Cerakote was a NIGHTMARE! Tight tolerances and Cerakote are great but a real pain on assembly. Lol!
