I'm going to take my 223 to the blind this year with me, since I've never killed anything with any of the ars I've built. 6.8 does have more power. But if you hit them in the heart/lungs or neck they gunna die

Yes. Shot deer with both. Deer in my avatar was 6.8. I'd take 68 over 556 all day long. 100-110gr Accubond shot .75 MOA and were lights out on deer.

Absolutely, I've shot deer with both and if nothing else just like the idea of having the bigger bullet of the 6.8. I shoot the 115 grain fusions out of mine and it really knocks the snot out of them! The 6.8 is definitely the one I would go with specifically for deer hunting between the two

I have killed lots of deer and hogs with my 223 77gr SMK just shoot deer in the neck and pigs in the ear. My rock river is my meat gun never let me down yet.

I was in the same dilemma trying to pick a rifle for my daughter to start with. I ended up going with a 6.8. I used it a few times on some does and its quickly becoming my favorite rifle. Everything is just DRT.

If I had both I would pick the 6.8. However I don't and I won't because the ammo is expensive and can be a pain to find. I've killed a hundred pigs with my .556 if I've killed one and some of them were pretty darn large. Only have killed one deer with it but that is because I mostly bowhunt for deer.

6.8 does cost more but it is far from hard to find. Heck Academy carries 3-4 different options.

Will if you WANT a 6.8 by all means build one. But I would have NO problem hunting with my 5.56 ARs with the right bullets. I would use the TSX rounds on hogs and such but for deer if use Fusions, Game Kings, or any other type of cup/core Bullet. Stay away from Varmint bullets though.

Given your situation I would rush out to build a 6.8 though.

FWIW, I built a high end 6.8 about a year and a half ago. I was never wowed by it like people told me I would be. I sold it back in the spring.

Been waiting for your response. Always value your input, particularly on AR subjects. I've got an Aero Precision build in std 5.56, and then a Noveske build in .223 Wylde. Thinking of just buying a 6.8 barrel to throw on the Aero to give it a shot. That way if I don't take to it, I've only go $$ tied up in the barrel, bolt and mags.

                    This AR stuff is addicting....

Well, I typically shoot within 40 with my bow! I've shot a few does with a rifle over the past 10 years, but honestly haven't gun hunted much.

I'm betting I would be within 150 yards with either caliber option on this gun.

With a 6.8 plan on buying new mags and a new bolt in addition to the barrel.

300 blackout would be another option. Just a barrel for that one, so its much cheaper. The barnes tac tx 110 grain is pretty darn solid.

Yep and Academy stores can be dern hard to find in Llano or Brady or a plethora of other small towns. Most feed stores in the country will have .223 rounds. Unless someplace got shot up and the anti group has the ammo scroungers scarfing it up.
