    270 reloaders, favorite combos?

Loading for a 270 Winchester, trying to get the 150gr SST running well. Ran my first batch today with some imr7828 (chosen because it is listed as producing high velocity with low pressure and good case fill). The results were the worst I've ever had in my reloading career, by far. I'm talking about 3-4" groups at 100. I know it's not me, because I had two other rifles out this evening printing 1/2 to 3/4 inch groups, and one of them had never been shot before today, and it has a TERRIBLE trigger (Savage Axis).

So, what do you guys like for a powder to push the heavy 277 bullets? I'm thinking my problem might be too slow burning powder. Thinking I might try some imr4350 or h4831 I have on hand. Any other suggestions?

I'm loading 150 gr nosler balisitics tips over IMR 4350.

I've not loaded for the .270 but 4350 and 4831 would top of the list to try. 7828 strikes me as too slow to be optimum for the .270.

It was listed in multiple sources, but I think you're right. I'm gong to try some of those others and see what I can get going. I was just hopeful since it showed potential for nearly an extra 100fps with very low pressure. Oh well, I'll find another cartridge that will use it.

That's what I'll try first, next weekend. Hoping to get AC installed in the man cave this week, plus it'll give me a week to let my shoulder recover. 30 rounds of 150gr in a lightweight rifle isn't fun. This is why I prefer heavy rifles. I'll deal with the weight hiking into my hunting setup so I can actually enjoy shooting my rifle in the off season.

I tried loading 7828 in a buddy's 300 Wby without success. Same results as yours—the groups were just big. I don't know anyone who uses it. It's slow by IMR standards but not really a slow powder in the big scheme of things. Not sure what I'm going to use the almost pound of it I have left for.

I shoot a Remington model 700. It's favorite load is 53 grains of imr 4350 with a 130gr Sierra spitzer pro hunter bullet and a magnum rifle primer.

I'm thinking all try the 4831 since it's a bit slower and I'm running heavier bullets. If that doesn't work I'll try the 4350.

I did notice write a bit of muzzle flash with the 7828. It was late in the day, but still more flash than I'm accustomed to from any rifle at any time. I'm thinking that was because the powder was way too slow and still burning when it came out the muzzle.

Don't be afraid to change primers or bullets either.

If you have access, try some of the Vit powders...N160 & N165 are fantastic powders. The N165 is a tad slower than 4831 & should be ideal. I've moved to the vit line on a lot of my rounds. Little more expensive, but have had great luck combining velocity & accuracy with this line.

Agree with the others on 7828...to slow for that case size.

I'm going to stick with what I'm running for now anyway. The accuracy I'm seeing, or lack of rather, is not something a different primer is going to fix in my experience. I'm loading for a close friend, and since he already purchased 200 of these bullets, and they are not keyholing, I'm going to try to make them run. If I don't see something promising in the first 100 bullets, I'll try something different.

I don't remember the charge but we used to have good luck with a close to max load of 4831 and Sierra 150 Gamekings. I have heard people are having good luck with the new Enduron 4451 for the 270 and 280.

I'll look into them if I can't get 4831 or 4350 to run. I hear they are very clean burning powders.

My powder of choice for the .270 is H4831 / H4831SC, but I don't like the 150 grain bullets for that cartridge. I've always received much better results with 130 grain offerings in every .270 I've shot, including some friends rifles.

I know your buddy has 200 of those, and you planned to test 100. That's 100 hard-kicking reminders that you might want to try 130's instead.

If you would like, I can ship you some Hornady 2730 SP's, Speer 1458 SBT's or Sierra 1830's to try. All are 130 grain. I'm currently loading the 2730's in my own rifles.

                              All the best,
                              Glenn
