    Build your own AR

Not a big gun guy but I was thinking of building an AR before they become hard to get.

I have an FFL so I can order my stuff directly to me.

What is the cheapest I can build one for my "personal collection"

Thinking 5.56 so that I can shoot .223 or 5.56, nothing fancy at all.

    Thanks!

Here's another budget AR thread from this morning. Lots of good info. PSA is probably best bet for a budget build. Complete rifle kit minus the lower for $409 right now.

You can buy an assembled rifle or a separate assembled upper and assembled lower as cheap as you can build assuming to use the same parts to build.

If this is going to likely be your only AR purchase, spend a little more and get a quality one from the get go.

Colt 6920 rifles can be had for around $900. Or if you just really want to build, buy all the parts from BCM.

Not bad, are you FFL holder or how much did you spend going through FFL?

Trying to see how much, having that, is going to save me.

I didn't have to pay any FFL fees at all. I picked up the lower on sale at a local dealer, so they didn't charge me a transfer fee. It has taken almost a year to gather all the pieces, for this one, because of having to wait on sales for the parts I wanted.

Have a friend at work that builds them for me. Under $500 without optics.

Only the lower is FFL item I pay 25.00 transfer fee for ea lower I build on. Main thing to watch for is shipping cost. On PSA they offer free shipping alot just got to watch for it.

I would go .223 Wylde tighter tolerance when swapping form 5.56 to .233 ammo best of both world IMO.

Right, not sure why I said upper, meant lower. Its what carries the SN making it the FFL item.

I already have a .223 NEF rifle so maybe for ammo sake I stay with .223.

                        Hmm

So what sites are you using to order your uppers and lowers / parts from?

I see you around alot of gun talk, so I value your input.

                        Thanks

Thanks, there is the info I need.

Missed that thread or I wouldn't have even started this one.

                            Build your own AR

If you are going to build and accuracy is your main goal then a Wylde chamber may be ok.

If it's going to be an all around utility rifle, I would stick with 5.56.

My Colt 6920 will stack 77 grain OTM Black Hills Ammo in under 1" all day long.

And I can burn cheap steel cases 5.56 through it if I want to just go "plinking".

I don't know that you will save any money as an FFL other than transfer fees unless you are set up to buy through a wholesaler. I know Midway no longer gives discounts and Brownells only gives like 5%.

                            Here's a Colt LE6920 with Magpul furniture.

If you buy a Colt, make sure to buy an LE model. They are still built by Colt Defense with quality parts. There's a lot of Colt rifles out there being built by their competition division and even some that aren't even built by Colt.

Nothing like running through 1000 steel casings!!!
