SBR Questions

All this SBR talk got me thinking I need one in 300 blackout. So here are a few dumb questions for the experts:

How close do I have to be on the overall measurement on the Form 1? I am not certain on the actual barrel length I will end up getting 9 or 10.5"? Mostly depends on which complete upper I decide on. If I end up having to amend later to change the length, will that end up costing another $200 and then have to follow the new rules after July 13?

What upper would you suggest? What is a good upper for around $700?

What is the accuracy one should expect for a SBR? I noticed some reviews showing groups as big as pie plates at less than 50 yards. This gun will not need to be a one hole gun, but I would like to maintain atleast a 2" group at 100 yards.

You don't have to be exact. There is a big debate about whether the oal is measured with the stock collapsed or extended and that alone changes by several inches. For my 9" 300 blk I did 26.5" oal. For my 10.5" 5.56 I did a 29.5". For my 22 with a 4.5" barrel I think I did a 25.5 or 25". I forget lol.

File it now. You can amend it with a letter to the ATF for no additional fee at a later date if needed.

As far as which upper is best that's going to be a matter of opinion. And there are a ton of factors that can change what you get. Decide what you want then ask. Length. Rail type. Etc. I'd suggest building it exactly how you want top to bottom.

Accuracy isn't based on length. Either the shooter sucks or the gun sucks but a 9" 300 should be just as accurate as a 16". The only thing that will change is velocity.

I bought one from sons of Liberty gun works in San Antonio. A buddy owns the place and he assured me it would shoot sub MOA with the proper ammo. Of course if you feed it bulk junk it's not gonna be a hammer. That's to be expected. My 5.56 is a 1-1.5" gun at 100. Haven't tried much else. Just standard ammo. NO gun should shoot groups the size of a pie plate. Ever. Unacceptable in my opinion.

You can get a BCM for around $700... top notch guns.

SBR tend to have MORE inherent accuracy due to the stiffer barrels. My 11.5" 5.56 is far more accurate than my 16" guns with good ammo. They do like heavier bullets though.

I was looking at BCM, runner runner, bison and a fee others. Any one have one of these? How well do they shoot?

I'd build an upper if I were you.
I buy a lot of my stuff on Brownells website.

This is what I did and fixing to duplicate...

Spikes stripped upper - $100 (not sure where I bought it)
Aero Precision upper parts kit - $18
Spikes M16 BCG - $140
Noveske 8.5" 300 Black Out barrel with gas block and pistol length gas tube - $350'ish
Handguard of your choice - $50-$250

It shoots the Rem UMC 120gr OTFB $15.99 box of ammo from academy under moa (@ 2000 fps) and even better with the Barnes 110gr TAC-TX.


I've read a couple good reviews on other websites on the 8" Seekins barrel that is around $250, but if I'm spending that kind of money, I want something proven from first hand knowledge (a couple buds of mine have the Noveske barrels).

To build an upper you need a receiver block (something to hold it in the vice) and a barrel nut wrench, allen wrench for gas block . A small punch too, if you get a stripped lower.

Depending on where you are located, I can almost guarantee someone on here will let you borrow the tools needed.
