    Need quick advice: 1911

I have a son that decided to buy his first 1911. Plan was to go shopping Sat. and compare what was out there.

Well. he stopped at one shop and fell in lust with a Rock Island 1911 for $549.00

Single stack. Adjustable sights and extended ambidextrous safeties. Looks pretty nice but I've not seen it in person.

Anything good or bad to say about this brand?

I have a Rock Island GI model that I love. I've never had to use their customer service, but I hear it's great.

Heard good things about that Gun in that price point it's a great buy. Check buds guns for a price check. Just like everything you can go higher or lower but at the end of the day go have fun and enjoy the purchase.

You're going to get what you pay for. This is the cheapest to get into the 1911 platform, and will not be anywhere near the quality of the high end 1911's. But if you're not expecting the moon from this gun, then go for it.

While they are not the cheapest 1911, they are close. That said don't let anyone tell you they are not good guns.

I shoot one regularly in USPSA, for example here is a list of "high end" guns my "crappy" RI has beaten; Baers, Wilsons, STIs, SVIs, Springfields, Colts, various customs, and several others I can't remember. Also I have had a couple of springfields one of which was a trophy match, and while they were great guns too, they didn't perform any better than the lowly RI. I personally think the only time yoU will see an appreciable difference is in bullseye competition and finish, for a user type gun both of these things are a moot point.

Good luck with your purchase, whatever you go with

I have a RI 1911 with 3.5" barrel. It hates being dirty and is very finicky about what ammo it'll shoot. But when kept clean and loaded with Winchester HP's it is a very good shooter.

The 5" Rock Island guns seem to run pretty well. I had one and liked it alot, especially after owning other starter price 1911's. Once you get a higher end 1911, there is no looking back. The RI 1911 is a fun gun for the money, and with 45acp prices being what they are, start reloading to spend the money with alot more shooting.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The model he wants is the one pictured and it sounds like a good first 1911 for him.

Me and my brother bought 600 rds of 9mm ammo.
He had a Ruger sr9 I had my 5" RI 1911. We each out a couple drops of oil on the slides before we started shooting.
We'd empty out 2 mags just as fast as we could pull the trigger set it down reload our mags and shoot again. My mags hold ten rounds his 18.
We did this till we was out if ammo.
Than went over to the rifle bench and shot my 300WSM. He shot it a couple if times. He wasn't a fan. Too much recoil.

I've had one. It was functional but fit and finish on it was very poor.

I would save just a little more and look at the ruger Sr 1911. I own both the rock island and the ruger and the ruger you get a lot better finish for your money. The ruger has never had a hickup the rock I had to replace the recoil spring to get to run right.
