Assemble from scratch or buy & modify

Got one AR squared away as far as parts. Now I want to get an LR308 type rifle started. I can get a complete basic LR308 for about 800 and then spend another chunk on a longer/better barrel and a rail. Or I can buy the upper and lower receivers and assemble one part-by-part. Any recommendations on which route to take? I figure I'll end up at around 1300-1500 either way. Buying a complete rifle skips the potential wait period for uppers to come in stock, assembling one means I can potentially get better parts for the same cost.

I am going for a 18-20" barrel, full rail, scope only, shooting both suppressed and non-suppressed. Will be more of a target/distance accuracy rifle than anything that would need to be mobile for hunting or whatever. Weight not an issue. I figure since Ruger has stated they won't make the Precision Rifle in lefty I'll spend the money on a nice accurate semi-auto.

    What do y'all suggest

If you’re not in a rush I’d say build it. You can take the time to get exactly what you want and get good deals.

If you want it now buy and upgrade over time

I can tell you that a DPMS LR-308 bull barrel (cut to 18-20") is more accurate than most shooters so I'd say a barrel change wouldn't be necessary. Mine was a 1/2" gun.

I sold it because it was just too **** bulky and heavy for anything other than bench shooting.

I'd buy a DPMS Recon II and be done with it. They are actually very good rifles.

Build it the way you want it from the get-go. Chances are, you'll buy one and then swap half it out anyways.
