Why no custom builds from ruger rifles

I have always been a Remington fan boy.
I have a couple of custom builds on Remington actions
    All really nice rifles

Some how I have ended up with several Rugers.
While not as smooth of a action as the Remington's they still shoot very well.

I was just wondering why no one seems to build custom guns from them and why there are so few after market parts, other than for the 10-22

    Mr. Marty,

Remington has a history of producing very accurate rifles thanks to Jim Stekyl. Once the short range (< 300 yds) bench rest competitors started shooting world records using the 700 action, it started a cult following amongst gunsmiths and hunters who were searching for optimum accuracy. Specialty tooling was designed for GS's to true and blueprint the 700 action. Stock makers followed suit by creating aftermarket Remington stocks for custom rifle builds.

Ruger actions are cast and built very solid. Some claim their tolerances aren't as tight as the Remington. The Ruger integral scope base and unique action design make it difficult to dial in on the lathe. Most of the specialty action truing tools are made for the round 700 action.

if you search the inet you'll find plenty of custom M77's and devout followers. Here's a link with more opinions and pictures of custom Rugers ..... http://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthr...ifles_on_ruger

What Cajun said. And don't underestimate the workability factor of the Rem 700 action. With the proper equipment and training it's easy to make them super accurate. As one guy said, it's just lathe work. With the exception of Savage, other actions require more effort to work on and rebarrel. But it can be done. Friend of mine has a Ruger rebarreled to 6mm Rem Mag. With Barnes TSX, it's an accurate killer.

I had a .300 WSM build on a Ruger. It was sweet

While the Ruger M77's are solid rifles, there design is a bit different from the Rem. M700. Namely the cylindrical shape, integral recoil lug and diagonal action screw. While they can be worked on and accurized, its a little more work to do so. Early tang safety models were push feed with the claw extractor while the newer versions are CRF. Remingtons are and have always been push feeds. There are many more Remingtons around with basically the same design they started with while Ruger has changed it's M77 design over the years and haven't made as many. The aftermarket support simply isn't there for Ruger. When you get down to it the M700 isn't that great of an action from the factory but it's simple design has others copying it with some refinements and are very popular for customs.

Back in the mid 80's I had a 6mmx284 and 200 swift built from tang safety M77's and they continue to be great shooters.

I have a custom Ruger 17HMR and a custom 17 MachII built off the 77/22 mag and 77/22 rifles. They will not be for sale.

Not to hijack the thread but who built them. I've been drooling over the thought of a custom 77/22 for a while now.

The trigger for the 17 Mach II was rifle basix and the 17HMR was Volquartzen. The barrels were made by Green Mountain. The 17 Mach II is a delicate hexagon and a beauty on the walnut 77/22 now 77/17 Mach II. It is the best under 100 yards prairie dog, rabbit and ground squirrel rifle I have ever had. It would be a fantastic squirrel woods rifle. The 17HMR is a fluted heavy barrel SS and super accurate. I have made prairie dog shots with that little cartridge farther then you would believe. Just have to have a good spotter and no wind. The beauty of the 77/17-22 or 77/17-22 rifles is the ease in which custom barrels and triggers can be added.

I think there are alot more options for the 700 and they are a little easier to work on.
