My suggestion would be to go to an indoor range that rents handguns and shoot Glock 17 and 19 both Gen 3 and 4, the Springfield XDM and Mod2 and the S&W M&P.
They are all top shelf combat handguns that will provide you years of service. Everyones hands will prefer one over the others and there is not enough difference in price or capacity or warranty to put one way above the others.
And dont add a bunch of stuff to it until you are very familiar with it and know you need it. You are gonna be mad if it craps out in your class because of aftermarket parts.

^^^This.. I went with G19 gen 3 and added TFO sights first day. The Springfield and S&W are pretty hard to beat too and you can get any of these for less than $600.
