I love my Glocks but honestly I would point you towards a revolver for what you're looking at. No slide for your wife to worry about and you can get them in the same price range as a Glock. I carry my G43 in my front pocket of gym shorts all the time no issues.

I have both the Glock and Taurus in 380.
Make sure she can work the slide because the slide on my Taurus is two times as hard as my Glock.
She will like the Glock better.

As others have said find a range with a large selection of guns and go shoot.
Im a glock guy, but the grip angle on a glock is a little different than most and i can honestly say i prefer the feel of a 1911 style pistol.

Revolvers are good but lets be honest.(and im not saying that its not the right choice, just weigh the pros and cons) in a lightweight revolver your gonna have 6 shots at the most, maybe 5 depending on the model you pick. Under stress those 6 shots are gonna go fast! and your not gonna reload it. its just too difficult for most without sufficient training.

Semis are nice, but you've gotta find the right one that your wife can operate. Dont shy away from what might look like a bigger pistol. especially something in the Glock 19 size range. something that you can really hold on to and get a firm grip with will give you the impression of less recoil, and you would be surprised how far a good holster will go towards comfort. that's another area you will just have to experiment with.

Heavy pistols are just like heavy rifles, they will soak up recoil.

on a serious note when your trying out guns at the range ask the guy about cost and reliability, and when the time comes buy the most pistol you can afford...after all you would be doing it if you though you life might not depend on it.

On the reliability note like i said above. ask the guy or gal at the range. most of us don't get to handle alot of different pistols and none of us will put as many rounds through a given sample as a commercial range will. if those guys tell you a particular gun has never given them a hicup it would give me a fair bit of confidence in that gun

Depending on what you want the pistol for- don't overlook a 22. Easier on the pocketbook, both initially and long-term.

I carry a Taurus G2 in 9mm and love it. It's light weight and easy on the slide and recoil. My wife doesn't have issues with either. Just my .02

A Glock would be good for carrying around in your pocket as long as you don't have a round chambered. There is no safety on them. The 42 is a great size. I won't carry a gun for protection unless it's chambered and I won't carry a chambered Glock because there isn't a saftey. Now if it was in a pocket holster it's a different story but still not my cup of tea.

I dont mean to be confrontational but thats not true. although glock may not have a saftey switch or button the user presses, all glock pistols have 3 internal safeties which automatically disengage as the trigger is pulled and re engage as the trigger is released. Glocks are safe weapons. google "glock safe action system" for specifics, but to sum it up, as long as nothing is pressing on the trigger, the weapon will not fire. Glocks have been carried by a majority of law enforcement angemcoes and military units around the world, and most recently the Glock 19 overtook the SIG P226 as the standard side arm for the SEALS. if the people who are likely to use their weapon trust Glock safety then i do to.
