I initially set out to get a Ruger Mark III as a suppressor host, but the only models that Cabelas carries are the 22/45 (had $250 in points). Don't like the 22/45, just a personal thing. Really don't like the Lite models, though I'll get back to those in a second.
Anyways, Browning released a Field Target Buckmark model at the SHOT show that is suppressor ready. I really liked the look of this model, and I really enjoyed the last Buckmark I had. Cabelas carries it too, so today we ventured down to the new store in League City. The LC store is not that big a store, but I suppose it has all the same stuff. Definitely more compact than even the ones in Buda and Gonzales.
So, I used up my Cabelas points and plunked down a few extra dineros on the last suppressor ready Field Target model they had. First off, I like that it came in a soft case. Nifty. Just one mag, but that's all my old Buckmark had, no big deal. Same ol' comfortable trigger, and same ol' adjustable sights I remember. The laminate grip panels are a nice addition over the old rubber ones. So, pretty much what I expected from it. Except one thing. Weight.
It's a good thing. The full top rail adds a few more ounces and slightly shifts the balance to the muzzle, which should be nice for accuracy shooting. It definitely feels a little hefty for a 22, but I suspect this thing will be a real nice shooter, especially after I drop a Volquartsen target hammer in it.
Ok, the negatives. I think the 5.5" barrel may mean that not every single load I fire from it will be subsonic. Not too big a deal, because I'll enjoy the other features of the pistol for accuracy shooting and hunting. I can always get some heavier 40gr LRN and subs for it. And back to the weight. Add a suppressor on the end of this thing, and I think it will be pretty heavy. Now I see why the 22/45 Lite models are popular. Still like the Buckmark better. It'll still be fun for suppressed shooting, but perhaps not something I'll hike with. We have a Single Six Hunter with a scope that is fun to shoot at the bench, so it'll be fun to see how the Buckmark compares.
Overall, I'm happy with it, even with the obvious compromises. I'll post a before and after with the Volquartsen hammer, and of course a post when the can comes in. Getting a Spectre II
