The 1377 maxes out at 6.32 FPE. That is nowhere close to enough power to kill a possum. All you're going to do is make him angry.

I built these for client Christmas gifts.

You are probably right. I just have a hard time believing that a 5 yard head shot would not put down an opossum.

What would you suggest as a more appropriate air pistol? Preferably non-PCP and non-CO2, because it will live in a drawer, and I'd like to be able to grab and go. Let's forget the $100 mark, but keep budget in mind. I can see how these things get ya, and I may have a new hobby!

I have put the muzzle of a 1377 flat against the top of a possum's skull and pulled the trigger. Not dead. Consider this, a regular .22LR rifle spits out a 40gr bullet moving 1070fps (subsonic). That alone is 101 FPE, which is more than fifteen times as powerful as the 1377. A big part of the problem comes from the lack of hydrostatic shock generated at 6FPE.

If you are looking for a backyard solution because firearms are illegal where you live, get a trap.

I do not know of a non-PCP pellet pistol that will kill a possum humanely.

I'm waiting for my Beretta Bobcat 21a barrel to get threaded and get sent back to me, but I'm still looking for something to kill rats/blackbirds or the occasional squirrel with.
