    Want a Cheap Bullet Feeder?

First of all let me say that I am not the one who came up with this idea. Since I don’t have a machine shop handy I came up with this method to get the job done.

I placed an order for 5 Hornady bullet feeder dies in .45, .44, 10mm, .357, and 9mm. On sale at Midway for $24.49 each. Plus at the time I placed the order it qualified for free shipping. They came in this morning. Here is what one looks like.

Next was a trip to the local McCoy’s Building Supply. I took one of the dies with me and found out that cpvc ¾ inch pipe fit just perfect over the top of the die. I mean like it was made to fit. I bought one ¾ X ½ inch cpvc reducer and a 10 foot length of ½ inch cpvc pipe.

Took this to my shop and got the die pretty well adjusted on my Dillon 650. I wanted to have the ½ inch pipe fit directly on top of the feeder die. Otherwise bullets would probably stick in the chamber created with the bushing. To accomplish this I reamed out the stop in the reducer where the pipe goes all the way through. Here is a picture where the stop has been removed and the pipe will go all the way through.

I took the ¾ bushing and mashed it onto the top of the bullet feed die. I then cut a 3 foot section of the ½ inch cpvc pipe. This was placed in the bushing and pushed down until it contacted the top of the die. On the .45 caliber die it actually goes in the die with a perfect fit. Next I drilled a hole where I could place a hitch pin to keep the bullets from feeding while placing it on the feed die.

Here it is installed on the 650.

This setup will feed .45, .44., and 10mm. I tried some 9mm bullets and they would hang up. I tried some pieces of plastic tubing to sleeve the inside of the pipe and they fed great. I’ll be looking for a source of the plastic tubing on my next trip to the big city. Podunck Tx doesn’t have that type of stuff. Total cost for everything is less than $30.

Thats pretty cool. How many bullets can you get in that pipe? And any issues with it wanting to fall to the side when you fill it up?

I haven't gotten that far yet. I would imagine it will hold at least 60 or so. I may rig an attachment point on the case feeder bowl or possibly something from the ceiling if necessary. Right now it's pretty sturdy but that's gonna be a lot of weight.

I bought the RCBS version, powder thru expander dies, for 4 calibers. I spent more time messing with them, than what it would have taken to have fed bullets by hand. I only tried cast bullets though and the bullet lube would jam them up. After dumping a tube full of bullets about 20 times, I gave up. Hopefully you'll have better luck.

I have a buddy that uses one of these progressive loaders and seems like it would be just the ticket for him. If you built you up 3 or 4 of these you could pre load and cap the top and leave the pin in the bottom and you could knock some rounds out quick having all of those bullets sitting and ready to go.
