    Brass question

Picked up my uncles reloading stuff. Quite a bit of brass. Some Winchester some federal some Remington in 30-06. Is there a big difference in the brands when reloading? He had it bagged separately but if some got mixed will there be an issue?

Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am new to reloading for any other calibers and have only used one brand of brass for that caliber.

    Thanks in advance.

    Don't mix brass.

Some say it matters and some say it doesn't. If I was trying to reload for the absolutely the best accuracy, I'd use the same brand cases.

If you are loading to shoot good accurate loads it will matter just like any other minor detail. Some brands have slightly thicker brass, some thinner, some have slightly more case capacity some have slightly less. I would say if you are trying to reload for accuracy absolutely separate the brass. Remember accuracy is about consistency, every minor variance from one round to another will degrade your accuracy. If you just want to pop off some rounds out of your CMP Garand from 50 yards then it won't matter.

Hunting distances (-200 yards) it really doesn't matter. You start stretching distance for precision shooting you will notice slight performance. The main difference for reloading purpose is the inside wall measurement. Some brass has a tendency to be thinner (still safe) for those who like to shoot compressed loads (not advisable but sometimes necessary for mag length loads).

Personally, I wouldn't use old brass if you don't know its history.

It can matter in max load. Different brands have different case capacity. Stick with one brand. If you want to take it even further, then weight sort them.

It made a big difference in my custom rifle I had to throw all my old brass away !

At least sort them by head stamp and don't mix for many reasons stated above.
