    Re Barreling Question

So I have a Remmy 22-250 VS I am thinking about changing to another short action caliber. Since it already has the HS precision stock and an older remington action I thought it would be a good base to start from. Problem is that I'm looking at between $900 - $1200 to accomplish this (including upgraded trigger).

Is it a waste to do this? Should I just try and sell the VS and start over? Looking to go .260 rem or .243 win.

    Thanks for the help.

    sboudreax,

It's not a waste at all. It's a pretty solid plan I think. Your pricing is about right for truing the action, adding a premium barrel and upgrading to a mid-level aftermarket trigger. We'd actually be a little lower than the low end of your pricing, btw.

You are at a point where the value of your rifle is about equal to what you are looking to put in it. The difference is, everything will be done right with a much higher quality barrel than the factory version, and it will have much less runout in the chamber than any factory punched tube.

If you sell the rifle outright and replace it with something comparable from the factory, you will have no control over those variables. Since you already have the foundation for what you are wanting, I'd go ahead and run with it. You'll generally end up in a better place in the end.

based on my math , you'd spend around $200 less if you sell the VS outright for $900

then buy parts separately and build what you want (using the same type HS stock which I guesstimated at $250)

I agree with Blake...only thing I would add is if the VS shoots bug holes already is it to NOT sell it & keep it as is.

I would Find another cheap donor action if this was the case...most of those vs will shoot with just a skim bed.

Agree with Paul. $ aside, shame to get into a rifle that's already a shooter.

Trying to follow the math here, but not quite getting there? Trued action, new barrel, new trigger about $900ish. You end up with a pretty solid build on a 700/Hs precision platform.

The other way, you sell the rig for $900, which would be pretty optimistic but doable. Then you need the following used parts to get back to the original build plan - using low numbers here.

700 action (that you already had)- $350
Hs Precision stock (that you already had) - $250
Premium Barrel from whomever - $325-$375
            Trigger - $100

I'm at $1,050 without any barrel or action work accounted for. Say $250 for that and you're sitting at $1,300. And you end up with the same build you could have had for $900 if you used your existing stock and action. What am I missing?

With the scenario to sell and build from scratch (according to your math) he has the new custom rifle at $400 out of pocket. $1300-900.

If he adds on to his existing rifle he will certainly have more than $400 in upgrades to make it a comparable custom. Barrel and fitting about $600 plus the trigger. So $200-300 more total out of pocket

I think this is where Blake is going with this.

Thanks guys for the responses! The rifle is a tack driver but I'm really interested in reaching out a little farther and I have a .223 that shoots pretty good so I'm okay in that caliber. I'm going to take the rifle to HCR in New Braunfels to see what we can put together. I'm ok with spending a couple hundred more on it as long as the results are good. I'm somewhat new to this so I'm just getting my feet wet. I'll let you know how it goes.

I'll say it again...that rifle has value as is, especially if driving tacks.

I would find another donor action & keep or sell that VS.

Good luck with your build. Check it out but I doubt that at HCR it will be "just a couple hundred" extra. Compare prices before you commit. Keep in mind there are numerous gunsmiths that can do what you need at far lesser prices. Learn from my mistakes that the location of the gunsmith should be way down the list of reasons to hire a GS. UPS trucks can go anywhere.

HCR is one of the last places I would take it based on price. I haven't ever been super impressed by their work for the money. APR, Texas Custom Rifles, and several others are near central texas and would be good options.

                        just saying

HCR $895 ... true action, install match grade barrel ; 4 month turnaround

                        PacNor $625 ... true action, install super-match grade s.s barrel ; 8-10 week turnaround

unless you have an extra $270 to throw away, I'd shop around and see what other gunsmiths charge

as noted above, GS proximity (location) is the last thing I'd worry about

So far I have only contacted local gunsmiths, looks like it is time for me to expand my search. Thanks very much for the input.

A new Ruger Precision in .243 would be right at $1000.

Probably the way I would go.

I will buy the 22-250 as is. Then you can build exactly what you want
