Kinda have a bad taste in my mouth with Nikon, sent the scope in because it was broken over a month ago. Still no scope, been calling every day and they finally told me today it may ship tomorrow or sometime next week

I did the same thing with a Leupold I guess they re all backed up

I just don't like the feel of the Tikka. I would much rather stick with the Rem 700 in either caliber, and then be able to easily modify the gun if I choose. if you choose a Tikka, you are pretty much stuck with the gun as it. I know you were looking for an "Off the Shelf Gun", but I always like to keep my options open.

As far as a scope, the sky is the limit. There are many new companies that offers some incredible scopes for the the money. You don't have to go with Zeiss or Swarovski to have a top of the line scope. Also, the Zeiss scopes that people are referencing are not their top of the line. there are other companies, I.E. Vortex, that offer better scopes for the money when compared to Zeiss' lesser products.

I think you put the first half on the wrong post! Thanks for the scope input though

$300 budget for a 1000 yard scope. You can get lucky but if you want to hit steel 10" steel at a 1000 yards you don't need a 18x zoom. I shoot at 1200 and rarely ever zoom beyond 10x power. 1000 yard scope will require quality glass, quality markings (etch, moa, mil - whatever your flavor). 1000 yard scope will require true springs that both vertically horizontally. 1000 yard scope will require true turrets that line up with zero play in markings.
I'd suggest getting to a long range club sitting behind some peoples 1000 yard scope to get an idea of what you are getting into. Don't be afraid to ask for cost. Some of these guys might be reps or dealers who could cut you a deal. Just expect to pay.

I wouldn't go below the buckmaster line and would recommend above it if you could afford it. Nothing wrong with buying used either. Prostaff is a good scope. Never looked throught the 5 but most less expensive scopes will get fuzzy at high magnification and get mirage really bad depending what your using it for may better for less magnification in a better scope. I'd atleast look through them try to when it's really hot as well you may find a great bargain

I just wanted to point out that the newer Pro Staff 5 is a vastly superior scope as compared to the older Buckmasters. The Buckmaster was the mid grade and Pro Staff was entry level for a long time, but Nikon has reversed those roles.

            Carry on.
