    Pigs with a 17 HMR

In the past two weeks we have had a ton of hogs move in and boy are they stupid! I have killed 8 so far. All sows in the 60 to 90 pound range except for 1 it was a baby that ran almost all the way to me, she was about the size of a beer can.

All the shots have been from 75 to 130ish yards, all head shots, all during the early evening, and all DRT! My 17 really likes the CCI 16 grain hollow point bullet and that little round seems to do a number on the pigs

That 17 does a nice job ! love mine. I also have a 22 TCM that is doing a great job on hogs.

Yep, ear holed a bunch myself.

      That 17 is nasty.

My son is currently learning to shoot it and doing quite well!

Good job on thinning the population! Lots of guys won't kill the piglets, but every pig you kill means less pigs in the future. KAP !

I shoot every pig I can get the crosshair on. I have found that I need a gun caddy with me at all times. There is no telling which direction they will run after the first shot, or while you are stalking if they are going to turn and start feed toward you. Some times it would be best to have a 12a, others a AR with a 30 round mag, every now and then the 6.5 for the ones that run about 300 yards and stop to look. But the 17 is by far the most fun.

The pressure that little round puts on their skull makes their eyes pop out sometimes once shot.....love it!

I love dome shooting them suckers with my 17. Longest DRT shot with it on a hog that weighed about 50 lbs was 155 yds. Hit him in the soft spot right behind the ear at a quartering away angle. Straight threw the brain. Dead before he hit the ground.

I quarter one once and threw it in a crock pot and made something close to pulled pork. Very good eating.

Tuthdoc had a tack-driving Savage .17 HMR, and he used to kill them down on the Junco all day, every day with that caliber.

He actually ran a test on a 150# boar one morning, it was broadside about 100 yards and he decided to see what it would do to the lungs of a big pig. He had been ear-holing them like crazy and he wanted to see what that .17 could actually do. So he lined up and put 1 right behind the shoulder and we got a pretty good feel of what direction of which direction he ran.

We gave the boar some time, and started the track. As you could imagine, there was no blood to track, and we knew it was going to be about impossible to locate. Well turns out that sucker made a pretty straight "death run" and we found him 75 to 100 yards piled and up and stone-cold dead!!!

We opened him up, just to see what that .17 did and that is when TD coined the term "liquify the lungs." That sucker was mushy on the inside, and those lungs were toast. I have a picture, somewhere. If I ever locate it, I'll post it. I was thoroughly impressed by what that .17 could do.

                            Kill Em All Folks... KAP
