Thinking about SBRing a Ruger American Rimfire

My RAR is already my quietest and most favorite gun to shoot suppressed. My only complaint is its length with an 18" barrel. I am thinking of buying another rifle and cutting it down to have something stupid quiet and also very short. The gun is only $199, so add another $200 for the stamp, $75 for threading, and it'd be a $475 silent squirrel assassin.

More than anything, I was hoping I could find someone who has already done this so I can learn from them. Changing lengths on an custom SBR is not the PITA I want to endure.

I am probably going to shorten the stock. I will definitely have to widen the channel, as the existing barrel is a touch narrower than my Mask HD or Spectre II.

    1. What length should I choose? I'd like to keep bulk pack subsonic I think.
    2. Has anyone done this? I have searched all around the Internet and haven't come up with a single hit.

Can't help you, but I have the same rifle and cut it down to 16.5" and threaded it. I'm in for details.

I think it will be, too. I'll likely do it even if it means being the first one, but just want to make sure I get it right.

My other 18.5" RAR is already awesome.

You'll have to get down to pistol length to keep everything subsonic.

you might be better off looking for a 16" integrated barrel.

Plenty of them on the market for the 10/22. Zero on the market for this rifle. Barrels are not interchangeable between the two, and I already have two rimfire cans.

You at least have the advantage of not needing to auto cycle in the RAR.
I have found the heavy Aquilla subs regularly available at Academy.
Not bulk like you want but avoids having to loose that much barrel length.

If you're talking about the 60 grain subs, they will not stabilize well in a barrel with less than 1:9 twist. Most .22 barrels are 1:16.

I have found the 40 grain CCI Quiets to be excellent, if a little dirty.

Yes look for the fps you want to stay at least 1070 fps that's generally the best for no noise with a punch any less it will be no noise but no punch at all unless you shooting rabbits or birds . It's a blast mine is quiet than a pellet gun .

I found a RAR for $206 shipped today, so I bought it. Here are some Photoshopped mockups of what it would look like in different configurations.

                          5.5 inch barrel:

                          4.5 inch barrel:

Interesting. I never thought about .22 subs crossing over into super range and coming back down before exiting. Where abouts would that occur. Assuming that's what youre saying.
