.177 cal pellet rifle ballistic test

Got bored this afternoon and pulled out the ol Benjamin Nitro Piston Prowler. Not a high end pellet rifle but it's accurate and it kills. It's rated for 1,200 fps with lead free pellets. It's also topped with a 4x32 Centerpoint scope.

The pellets tested were Red Flames (I call them ballistic tips due to the plastic tip), Destoyer DX (looks like Federal Hydroshocks), and these Lead Free alloy wadcutter-looking things.

The test medium was a 5 pound ziplock Baggie of brisket fat.

    Here are the results:

The Lead free measured 3.7 gr both before and after the shot. Great weight retention. Made the biggest entry wound, but little to no expansion. Penetration of ok. Very loud. Very....

.177 cal pellet rifle ballistic test

These are the Red Flames and are extremely accurate out of my rifle. Shot a squirrel with this round a few days ago and the damage was extensively impressive. Weight retention both before and after the shot was 8 grs. Mushroom was pretty.

And last is the Destroyers. These are neat-looking pellets similar to Federal Hydroshoks. These are also very accurate out of my rifle. Weight retention was 8 grs both before and after shot. Expansion was good, however the rim of the hollow point tends to break off. The upside to that is the remainder pellet body continues to penetrate like a needle. I like this pellet.

            How deep was penetration?

I have found heavier is better. That pellet is great considering the accuracy.

This is a two day argument. Buy different weights and shapes, shoot a bunch of paper, and you will find your pellet.............

That is awesome. I used to shoot sparrows and starlings with my RWS literally every day. I even killed a few prairie dogs and jackrabbits with it. These pellets weren't available then I don't think.

My gamo shoots these good, have killed skunks, coons, and few feral cats. Crossman powershot pellets

                    Leon, did you chrony them?
                    How far were you shooting?
Pushing those little suckers super sonic will give you some crazy corkscrew flight patterns at distances much beyond 20-30 yards... That Benjamin nitro-piston gun is a very good break barrel gun that is capable of some insane accuracy. Key to this type of air gun ((Single stroke spring(or nitro) piston)) is the hold when you shoot it. Get on You tube and search artillery hold for pellet guns... These guns have a double recoil that is tough to tame and is best left to work freely in most cases for the best accuracy. These dang big boy bb guns are sure fun to mess with though!

This was only about 15 yards. I didn't chrono them, but I will! I learned about the artillery hold when I first bought my Gamo. Awful trigger. Was gonna buy a custom trigger by Charlie Tha Tuna, but never got around to it.

I'll do some penetration test, too. I'll make some ballistic get so it can be official.

                      Lol

Any local type stores carry those Red Flame pellets (Academy, Sports Auth, Dicks)? Are those the same as the Predator Polymags? I'd like to try some of those to see how they'd do in my 22 cal rifle. I know I can order online but that dang shipping cost bumps the price up quite a bit for a tin of pellets.

                              Im glad to see this.

My wife and son both have a silent cat. Junior and I have been slaying the vermin a few days a week lately. He smashed a coon about a month ago with one shot. I thought for sure I was gonna have to finish with 22.

So far we've been shooting the pellet thats got that little BB looking deal in it cause thats what both rifles are zeroed with. Once those are out we have the red tipped ones to go. I have been impressed with the accuracy out to roughly 25 yards. I tried for a couple 'twofers' last weekend and couldnt make it happen.
