    Questions about .223 I'm sure you've answered

Wanting to use my AR as a primary hog gun because I think it's fun to carry and shoot.

What grain will a 1/9 twist barrel shoot accurately and what ammo has been good for you on pigs?

Success stories if you would like to share.

My 1/9 twist shoots the lighter bullets better. 45 and 40 grain. Personally I wouldn't shoot anything less than 55 grain bullets at pigs, especially body shooting them. I'd also use a softpoint or some other style of hunting bullet if you won't be shooting them in the head. My buddies from Sweetwater shoot hogs with AR's all the time. Hit them in the ear hole and they'll die.

Thanks rattler, ya I've plinked with only 55 grain and it's pretty dang accurate, just didn't know how much higher I could go

I killed 6 pigs during deer season, ALL with head shots using 55gr fmjs. I have no idea on a remedy for a body shot though, especially on BIG hogs

This is a really good chart to have when looking at twist rates and bullet grains

You actually won't know until you try. I know what " they " say, but sometimes " they " just ain't right ! My AR with 1/9 twist isn't supposed to shoot 75 grain bullets well, but it does. Go figure.

Each gun is different. The barrel twist can tell you what grain bullet will *probably* shoot best, but you never know till you experiment with different loads

I tried several loads and brands up to 62gr in my 1/9 without much luck on the heavier rounds. But it groups the 55gr Hornady Spire points extremely well.

My 1/7 likes the HyperClean 75gr and groups very well so I have several on hand. The last time I shot, I tried the 75 grain HyperClean rounds in my 1/9 and I be darned if they didn't group as good or better than the 55gr rounds.

I'm with you, "Go figure". But it's true.

I've posted before, probably discounted by many....but for hogs I use the Federal "green tips" in 5.56 but sorry, don't recall the grain? Personally I don't like anything but FMJ for hogs/pigs. I NEVER do the so called "ear shots," rather heart/lung and they are DRT. I don't claim to be a 200+ yard pig hunter, but I like the penetration factor of the FMJ vs. expansion rounds for thick hides/muscle. At least for me, just a "decent" shooter, they work with one shot "most times."

The only time I have had to use two rounds was...well, my aim was a little off, blew a boars lower jaw off but another quick round (where I should have hit him the first time) ended the hunt..on his part anyway.
