A custom barrel doesn't need fire lapping. Most of them are hand lapped to a mirror finish.

Correct. A factory barrel might need it. That barrel on my new one getting built is around $1000 or more. It better not need a break in!

Can you choose the barrel manufacturer , OR do you have to go with the rifle builders choice ?

Shilen makes great barrels but IMO there are 5-6 other manufacturers who deliver a better product

Edit: sorry to APR for my question and hijacking this thread, the topic & original post is about their rifles

I chose. Shilen was just the first name that rattled outta my brain. What's your suggestion?

Here's my 28 Nosler Robert put together for me. It's super accurate, like my others and I've really only just started with the load work up. It's 1/2" 5 shot groups at 200 right now with the 195 Berger VLD's. And a mv avg just under 3200 fps. I'm very pleased with that. Loaded all the rest of my new brass the other day. Gonna shoot it then rework and tune to see if it gets any better.

Remington 700 ultra action and BM
Bartlein 1:8.5 twist sendero contour barrel
McMillan Game Scout custom inlet in woodland spectre
                    Jewell trigger
                    Radial break
                    Ceracoat stainless with black bolt
                    Spiral fluted barrel and bolt
