Friday night had some thief steal a chainsaw and cordless drill off my back porch.

What's a good home defense shotgun?

Any shotgun that works very reliably is a good choice. Most people like the compactness and wider shot pattern that come with a shorter barrel. Also, some people prefer a pump action because it is A) scary sounding, and B) theoretically more reliable in that there are fewer things that can go wrong when the moment of truth arrives. A typical "riot/home defense" gun is a pump action with an 18+" barrel and an extended magazine tube that holds 7 or 8 shells. Any of the popular brands (Remington, Mossberg, Winchester, Browning, or Beretta) would be a good choice.

Remington 870 with an extended magazine tube. Personally I use an 887 Tactical. As was already mentioned, anything that works reliably will work. I don't care much about how intimidating the gun sounds when the action is worked. Mine already has one in the barrel. Pumping a shotgun in a high stress situation with someone in your house that's obviously not afraid of you,is a dumb idea. You're not scaring people by doing this, you're just letting them know you're there. If I can install a light on it that's all I'm worried about. Because if someone breaks in it's probably gonna be dark when they do it.
