That is exactly how the Barnes TSX bullets are designed to work!

For deer I would shoot the SST. It will give large expansion and massive internal damage and still easily be able shoot through both shoulders of a whitetail. We have been using SST for past couple years in 95 gr 243, 130 gr 270 and 162 gr 7mag and have shot through many shoulders causing DRT. Of course the Barnes will shoot through shoulders and cause DRT as well, but if you are a double lung through the ribs shooter the Barnes will not cause as much damage as an SST/Ballistic tip or any cup and core bullet, because it does expand as much nor shed weight. On deer sized game shot behind the shoulder, cup and core bullets will generally yield a quicker death and a shorter blood trail than monolithic bullets such as the Barnes.

The Barnes TTSX and TSX really shine when they are shot at high velocity (3000+ fps) at larger bodied and heavier boned game like elk etc. These type of game animals are where you actually need the level of penetration that monolithic bullets deliver.

For deer I think monolithic bullets are completely unnecessary and actually a detriment if you are "behind the shoulder" shooter.
