I have a Nikon Buckmaster 4.5-14x40 on my Marlin 917.

It has been a really great scope, and was about $300 which was the top end of my budget for that rifle. I've used it day and night, and it is a ton of fun to shoot coons out from under the feeder with at night, no problem using a Kill Light.

I use a Nikon PROSTAFF 4-12 BDC on my .17 HMR AR. Big fun to shoot and very accurate. Not sure how far I would stretch it out but defintely 200 yards is well within it's capabilities.
In case you were unaware, Nikon has one of their biggest PROMO's of the year going on right now. Check out some of this sites Sponsor's to see if they can help you out. Using the BDC reticle and Spot On with my .17 has already proven successful on multiple corn thieves.

Most of you would recommend 4-12 mag? is 3-9 not enough?

For those longer shots at smaller critters, the extra magnification is nice

I bought the Savage 17hmr package from Cabelas. I fully expected to swap out the Cabela's Pine Ridge scope it came with. The scope is still on there prob 6 years later. It is surprisingly good for a cheap scope.

I have a Burris Fulfield II on a Savage 22 and it's been fine as well.

There is so little recoil in these guns, I think any of the rimfire specific scopes would be fine.
