    AR-15 trigger issue

New AR-15 to the range this past weekend. Gun will cycle but the trigger will not reset for the next round. I ended up having to load one round in the magazine each time just to be able to shoot.

    Any suggestions or remedies?

so was the bolt staying open after each shot?
is it ejecting the round properly, just wondering if maybe the plunger spring may be too strong and not letting the bolt come back completely, therefore it won't load the next round.

i'd open it up and go through a manual dry fire cycle, making sure to not let the hammer hit the bolt catch and make sure that the hammer is being captured by the disconnect. Test it with the disconnect capturing with the trigger fully pulled and also with it released

No, the bolt didn't stay open. It would charge the second round but the trigger wouldn't reset to fire. I would need to put one round in the magazine, pull the handle, round is loaded, and I could fire. But if the magazine was loaded it would eject the brass, reload, but not reset the trigger to fire.

Is it new from the store .... Take it back

With it empty fire, hold the trigger, rack the bolt still holding the trigger. When you release the trigger you should hear a click of the reset. If this doesn't happen something is definitely wrong

ok, so it is cycling properly. Yeah, I'd start with the dry fire cycle with the upper off and just make sure all the parts are doing what they are suppose to. Disconnect should catch the hammer with the trigger pulled when you push the hammer back down. Make sure there isn't anything catching the hammer in it's cycling.

again, do not let the hammer hit the catch when you pull the trigger...just put your finger on the hammer when pulling the trigger and let it cycle slowly and then reset the hammer back down and make sure it's smooth and the disconnect is engaging. Something could be out of spec also.

Could always take your upper and throw it on another lower and make sure it's operating properly also, and vice-versa. Take a working upper/lower and put that upper on your lower and see if it acts the same.

another possible solution. disconnect not seated properly

Ok I took it apart. The disconnector was installed properly but I reassembled it anyway. Now on the function check the first two tries it didn't reset the trigger, after that it was fine. Guess I'll have to get it down to the range to see if it shoots.

Make sure you push the disconnector spring all the way down into the trigger body .... I had one that was installed correctly but hadn't seated into the trigger body enough and was causing similar disconnector timing issues.

I'll double check again, but that thing looked seated pretty good.

thought he said it was cycling and loading the next round, but wasn't firing.

Sounds more like its not going into battery on the next round. Sometimes it can chamber a round but not all the way so it wont fire. So if you charge it and it slams home and fires but not when it cycles its self that could be the problem.

If it fires every time you put a magazine in and release the bolt then the trigger is resetting its self, or are you having to do something to the trigger in between each time you charge it?

Can you post a video, might help

My guess is dirty, dry, under gassed, something that is keeping it from going into battery.

Buddy had this same issue with a factory colt rifle. DRY (no rounds near rifle) cycle bolt pull trigger and hold. Cycle BCG and release the trigger, if it does not reset bump the side of the lower if you hear a click like it reset then the disconnector is hanging. This can be alleviated by polishing the surfaces of the hammer/disconnector. With the upper removed put a piece of cardboard or something to stop the hammer from hitting the bolt catch, and get some polishing compound on the surfaces and work the trigger until smooth. Repeat this process until she is functioning like it should. My buddy just replaced his trigger group instead which is easy to do and relatively inexpensive depending on what you go with.

That's what a friend thinks too. He's going to give it a once over.
