Can I build a tactical shotgun?

I am interested in a tactical shotgun for home defense and have been pricing a few mossbergs and Remington's. My question is, I have an old 870 20ga, could I turn that into a tactical shotgun for the same or less money than buying a new one? I'm not trying to go too fancy. Just short barrel, extended tube, new sights, that sort of thing. If I was to convert the current shotgun I would probably have to strip it down pretty good and get it cerakoted. Any help/input is appreciated.

not a real good picture but this started out as a rusted 870 I bought from a guy for $75.00. I used the duracoat aerosol kit to paint it. bought an 18 1/2 inch barrel, knoxx stock, tube extension and Hogue forend off ebay. I probably saved a little money doing it this way but I'm not sure how much. fun part was doing it though.....

That's awesome! Did you have to do anything to it before putting the duracoat on?

Easily. Hacksaw the barrel to 18 1/8" clean it up a bit with a file. Oxpho blue it. Drill and tap for new bead and you are good to go (make sure you anneal the spot to be drilled first) If 5 shots aren't enough I guess you could put an extension on it. But 5 shots of buck will cure just about any problem.

the duracoat comes with all the instructions needed for prepping it. I think it included a degreaser as well. it was very easy and I thought it came out really good.

Yes, although 20ga parts can be a little harder to find.

870's are so cheap, just get another gun. Get a used one with wood stocks, you will swap them anyway

Did my 870 20 ga three years ago. As I remember, it was not very expensive. This was a plain, wood stocked shotgun about 1 hour before this pic. Grabbed everything at Cabela's and my brother and I changed it all out. Did not cut the barrel but very fun to shoot. Stays loaded with 00 buck in my room.
