    1962 Remington model 700

I picked up a model 700 yesterday and believe it to be born in 1962. Serial number starts with "O J". the bolt wont cycle with the safety on. It is a carbine model with nice fleur-de-lis checkering. My question is, it has was appears to be a silver aluminum butt plate. Does anyone know if this is original? It looks out of place with the black trim on the stock.

Look to see if there are brush marks on it. Maybe wire brushed all the finish off? And check to see if the "length of pull" is not standard for that year.

post a pic of the serial number

should be a 4 or 5 digit number with no letter prefix .... from 1000 to 50,000

early model guns had an aluminum but plate that was black , and sides of butt plate were coated with a clear coat that is yellowish in color and chipping away

I'm thinking the stock may have been refinished , butt plate should not be silver

square safety, short bolt shroud are indications of early model rifle

does it have a slot for a stripper clip, what about left side of action - should have small filler screws for an aftermarket sight

No brush marks. I will have to research the length of pull.

I am un able to identify a stripper clip slot. It does have serial number with no letter prefix. Serial number 17, ***x. Below is a pic if what may be the filler screws.

your rifle left the factory in late July - early August 1962

first production of the Rem 700 was Feb/Mar '62

here are some pics and info of my early model 700

ADL's have diamond pressed checkering and BDL's have fluer de lis pattern

note the red items circled. Older 700's have the square safety with adjustable trigger, smaller bolt shroud, stripper clip slot, and smaller rounded area near bolt knob/handle. These rifles also have an aluminum butt plate as the varnished finish easily flakes off the bp.

** if you find one like this, BUY IT !!!

a Williams rear sight mounts onto left side of action where screws are located

the stripper clip slot was used for rifles manufactured during war time as you could load the magazine via the stripper clip

I'm thinking someone removed butt plate and used some type of chemical solution to clean it and make silver

The stock seems to be sanded Blake...it doesn't look proud around the plate.

Dang Blake, you are a virtual rifle/shooting/reloading encyclopedia data base!! I've got my dad's and my father-in-law's early BDL's... They paid $114.00 for them at Grant Ilsing's in Houston... drove all the way there from Lufkin to get 'em... Both are priceless as far as I'm concerned... It's what my dad shot until he got his "Huski" .270... still have that too...
