Recently got a model 7 & after a quick look, I couldn't find a Jewell available & decided to give this new model from Timney a try...normally, I would have searched high & low for a Jewell as I have always been brand loyal for their superior products. Have been using them for years & simply at the top of their game when it comes to triggers. Aesthetically, the Calvin Elite a very handsome piece & hope it performs in the field as well it looks.
Installation was very simple if you have done this switch before on 700's & This was my first model 7 upgrade.
I opted for the 11oz model...many will say this is too light for hunting applications, but if you have ever spent time doing any real benchrest shooting behind a 1.5oz then you will understand. I also saw no reason to pay for the upgraded Calvin model. If you prefer pull weights in the 1.5lb range, I would suggest looking at the more moderately priced standard model. JMO from a common sense perspective.
~I'll have to get some range time & may just be used to having so many other Jewell's, but I think I prefer the skinnier & sharper edges on the Jewell...I'll just have to see long term if the Calvin shoe grows on me. Not a big issue but worth mentioning.
~The Jewell is also better on the overtravel & can be almost nonexistent if adjusted correctly...not saying the Calvin is bad in this regard at all. Overtravel is very good, its just the Jewell is better on my 700's.
~I need to note that I dropped this 7 into a Bell & Carlson & did have to file the stock to get trigger to fit...this is not unusual & the Timney's safety does make the overall width of the trigger a bit wider than the factory Remington.
I bought the 11oz option direct from Timney & found the personalized card to be a nice touch & especially am proud to do business with a company not afraid to share their faith in God...all in all I am very pleased. I do have one for a 700 still in the package I got some time ago & it's good to know what I can expect.
If I didn't have any experience with the Jewell, this Calvin Elite would be getting a 10 out of 10...The fact the Jewell is not readily available for the model 7 makes the Calvin Elite the very best option if you want something 1.5lbs & under for any gun where a Jewell is not an option.
